For aggressive chemical environments it does not get a any worse than at Boulby Potash Mine in North Yorkshire.
Situated on the high coastal cliffs and mining potash from the ground creates a cocktail of corrosive elements that
metal sheeting cannot accommodate.
Photo-1 shows the effect on metal cladding after just a few years exposure to such elements.
The answer to the problem was Filon Citadel, an opaque GRP sheeting with
a special chemical formula gelcoat on the weather surface ensures that GRP does not corrode.
Photo-2 shows vertical cladding, all of which is Filon Citadel but with
rust stain marks on the right hand wall. This is rust from the support rails inside the building where the
condensate from within the building has run out from between the sheet end lap joints!
Photo-3 shows the main building and conveyor housing clad in Filon Citadel,
most of which has now been in place for in excess of 20 years.
