COSHH Regulations and GRP Sheeting
Using hazardous substances at work can damage people's health. The law requires companies to control
exposure to such substances and protect employees and others who may be exposed by complying with the
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.
When working with Filon GRP sheeting products the following COSHH legislation requirements should be adhered to :
Product
Filon GRP sheeting is manufactured from glass fibre and polyester resins, which
incorporate fillers, UV light stabilisers and flames retardents.
Machining
Cutting or machining GRP produces a non-toxic biological inert dust which must be
kept as low as possible and not exceed the Occupational Exposure Limit of 10mg/m3
total inhalable dust and 4mg/m3 respirable dust per 8 Hour TWA value.
Adequate ventilation should be provided when working inside buildings. When working
outdoors it is most unlikely the above levels would be reached.
Should this Operators should wear suitable dust masks and goggles at all time. GRP
dust may cause slight irritation. Should this persist or any rash occur medical advice
should be sought.
All exposed skin should be washed thoroughly and frequently. Any eye contamination
should be washed using plenty of clean water.
Do not smoke near stores or working areas.
Storage
Filon sheets will burn giving of black toxic smoke which can contain hydrogen chloride
and hydrogen bromide fumes. Suitable fire extinguishers to use include, dry powder,
carbon dioxide, foam, and water spray. Self-contained breathing apparatus should be
worn.
Disposal
Scrap and waste GRP should only be disposed of at an approved landfill site.
