Back in the early 1980's Waverley District Council caused a stir when they built Farnham Sports Centre for £1.25m. Similar size centres with the same facilities were being built for £3m. The design was an interesting roofscape employing deep blue asbestos cement sheeting.
So successful was the building that Waverley sold the plans to another local authority who built an identical centre.
Twenty-five years on the roof was looking tired and leaking in places. The local authority
were concerned about stripping the old asbestos cement roof off, since this might generate
asbestos dust, and they wanted to keep the centre open during the refurbishment work.
The contract architect Trevor Wilkinson heard about Filon Over-RooFing and after careful study of all its benefits, including offering the least possible disturbance of asbestos fibre release, and specified the Filon Over-RooFing system.
The work was completed by Mallard Roofing, using the Filon patented Profix Spacer along with Filon Over-RooFing sheets coloured deep navy blue to match the original design.
During the work Mallard were required to monitor the daily asbestos airborne fibre levels at the end of each day. At no time did the fibre levels reach even 50% of the very stringent allowable levels, and the centre remained open throughout the work.
As a final foot note - the 1980's clone built by the other authority had its roof refurbished two years earlier using a metal roof. The cost was £265,000. Mallard completed the Farnham Sports Centre for £165,000.
