Least Cost Routing is the term commonly used to indicate a means of reducing call costs, usually by routing the call in a network other than BT’s. There are literally hundreds of companies offering this service. They usually target organisations with a headline low per minute rate. In many cases other calls such as mobile and 0870 national rate can be more expensive than BT’s standard rates.

The trend today is for alternative carriers to sign people up for Carrier Pre Select ( CPS) whereby all calls from your BT lines are routed via that carriers network.

Siemens Hipath 3000 has a sophisticated Least Cost Routing program with almost infinite possibilities to route calls via the cheapest route. Brightel Datanet recommend this as a more effective method of routing calls to optimise call costs. This could include:-

National calls routed via cost effective per minute carrier
International calls via another cost effective carrier
Mobile calls routed via FCTs)
Cheap rate & weekend calls via a carrier offering free local and national calls at these times
Calls to other sites within the organisation free via VOIP
0870 national rate calls via BT

The different routes can be used together so that if you cannot get connection via your VOIP network for instance, the call is re-routed via the PSTN.
