Convergence VOIP
Networks for telephony, data and video are still for the most part entirely separate. Convergence means stepped replacement of these separate networks with one network for all types of media. The mechanism for phone communication is known as VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol), which uses the same technology as used on the Internet and computer networks, for carrying data. BT have committed themselves to building such a multimedia network (21 st Century Network, 21CN) by 2010. Some organisations especially ones with multiple sites have already built their own private multimedia networks.
Siemens are a world leading player in convergence technologies. This technology is embodied in the Hipath 3000 range of telecomm systems and realised via the HG1500 card. Together they would support the following benefits:
- Optipoint 410 range of IP handsets with all the features of the Digital Optipoint 500 range. For further information see our web section Optipoint Handsets
- Reduced installation costs with only one data socket required for PC and telephone
- Reduced deployment costs when providing new extensions on larger campus sites
- Reduced moves and changes costs because extensions retain their identity and features anywhere on the network.
- Free calls between sites in an IP network.
- Home workers can have exactly the same features on their telephone as they would at the office
- Mobile workers can use their laptops equipped with an Opticlient 130 IP soft phone to make free calls to their office and cheaper calls via the Hipath 3000 LCR capabilities.
- Because the Hipath 3000 supports conventional telephony interfaces alternative routing can be automatically initiated in the event of a LAN/WAN failure.
The HG1500 VOIP cards to support up to 96 users for the Siemens Hipath 3000 range can be purchased from Brightel Datanet. Prices start at £1140 + VAT excluding installation, commissioning, and VOIP Handsets. Please see our section Optipoint Handsets for VOIP telephone options & prices.
