Convergence VOIPFAQs
Q: How are my VOIP extensions connected?
A: VOIP extensions are plugged into your computer network in the same way as computers. That means VOIP extensions can be connected via LAN, WAN or VPN, in fact wherever the corporate network exists subject to the reservations below.
Q: I have heard that speech quality can be impaired with VOIP?
A: This can occur if the underlying computer network is not up to the required standard. With VOIP speech information is assembled into data packets to allow it to travel over the computer network. Speech quality starts to suffer when there is a delay of more than 80 milliseconds in sending and receiving this data. To a PC user on the same network down loading a file, this delay would not be noticeable.
Q: How then can speech quality be assured?
A: By ensuring there is sufficient bandwidth on the LAN and that all network elements support QOS (Quality of Service), which prioritises speech packets to eliminate delay. In addition voice and data elements of a network are partitioned using VLAN (Virtual LAN) techniques.
Q: Who is responsible for ensuring my network can support VOIP?
A: Brightel Datanet can arrange a network health check by an expert who will measure the data capacity of your network and make appropriate recommendations.
Q: I Would like VOIP Home Worker solutions and free calls to our branch office but can I have ordinary extensions in the main office?
A: Yes because the Hipath 3000 is a true hybrid it happily supports a mixture of all types of lines and extensions on the same system.
Q: Will I have to have VOIP when BT deploys its new 21 st Century network?
A: No just as millions of analogue lines are still around after nearly 20 years of ISDN , telephony as we know it today, will exist in tandem for the foreseeable future. The beauty of the Hipath 3000 is that as a true hybrid it supports the existing infrastructure but is ready when you are to connect to VOIP networks.
Q: Are other Carriers providing converged networks?
A: Yes networks are already available which offer VOIP and consequently cheaper calls. Brightel Datanet can advise you on the current options.
Q: None of the listed benefits seem applicable to my situation can I still benefit from VOIP?
A: Sooner or later as converged networks evolve an application of benefit to you will occur. I.e. it will be possible in the near future to have free or almost free calls via VOIP. With the Hipath 3000 you can take advantage of these developments as they occur.
Q: Can I use ordinary ADSL broadband lines for home working via the Internet?
A: Yes but speech quality can not be guaranteed because the Internet does not support QOS. In practice Brightel Datanet have experienced acceptable speech quality with this scenario.
Q: What about security? Will hackers be able to eavesdrop?
A: All speech data is encrypted by the Hipath 3000 system making it difficult if not impossible to break into.
