East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre is situated where the North York Moors National Park meets the dramatic cliffs of the Heritage coast, the facility is a former RAF radar station. The dormitories are modernised units, comfortable and centrally heated; each sleeping between 10 and 28 guests, with a total of 116 beds. Dormitory blocks are all equipped with modern washing, showering and toilet facilities with access to drying rooms.

Key Facilities

The main building includes dining room, common rooms, games room, library facilities and shop.

Classrooms are equipped for environmental field studies with a range of visual aids, OHPs, TVs and videos, film/slide projectors and computers (BBC and PC).

Outdoor clothing and equipment can be provided to enable a wide range of activities to be successfully and safely conducted in all weather.

Seven minibuses are available for transportation.

Studies and Activities

An amazing wealth of study opportunities for all ages await you at East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre.  Natural habitats include woodland, marine, freshwater and moorland.  The built environment offers Whitby and local villages, history and archaeology. 

Courses tailor-made

Courses are tailor-made to suit your curriculum requirements and may be self-programmed or centre-tutored, by our qualified and experienced staff of former school teachers.

Specialist Courses

We offer a programme of more intense specialist courses which include BCU canoeing, RYA sailing and BOF orienteering.

On-site and Off-site activities

On-site activities include orienteering, climbing wall, dry ski and team building activities.  Off-site activities may include canoeing, kayaking, climbing, sailing, windsurfing, gorge walking, hill walking, downhill and X-C skiing. These courses are  tailored to your requirements and staff training courses are also available.
