Similar (but bigger than) those used by the R.N.L.I. Our modern 10 metre Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB) is called “Sussex Explorer” and is purpose built for coastal passenger tours and offers the speed and manoeuvrability needed for us to take up to 12 passengers plus 2 crew to destinations around the British Coast.

Our Humber RHIB was commercially built by Quinquari Marine (instead of a leisure               RHIB that has been just commercially coded like most other RHIBS used on the               South Coast).

Specifications include :

Designed for the open sea

Our Boat : RHIB Sussex Explorer
However a boat is only as good as its crew and we take pride in choosing the very best crew.
The boat is skippered by our Ship Masters, these people have spent many years sailing these types of vessels along our coast so they are very experienced when it comes to the sea and weather conditions we have.

The Ships Masters are all R.Y.A. Advanced Powerboat (Commercially Endorsed by the Maritime Coastguard Agency). This is the only commercial qualification in the UK that is specifically based around skippering high speed craft.

As well as being commercial Ships Masters, they are all Boat Handling Instructors and are also qualified in:

1st Aid at Sea

Marine Navigation

Sea Survival

VHF radio communications

Some of our Ships Masters are also experienced R.N.L.I. crew for the Eastbourne lifeboats.

Our Boat Crew / Guides although not required by law to hold any boat qualification are also trained to handle our vessel in case of an emergency to the standard of R.Y.A. Powerboat Level II.

All crews take part in regular training to keep their skills refreshed.
The Crew
Life Jackets
Sussex Voyages takes your safety very seriously. All passengers are fitted with life jackets that automatically inflate on contact with water, these jackets also feature a manual inflation toggle and a whistle.

Small children and babies are fitted with solid foam buoyancy jackets that always give buoyancy and help protect against wind chill.

Our boarding master & crew will help you fit your life jacket and ensure it is correctly fitted for comfort and safety.

We also supply waterproof jackets and trousers should the conditions require them.

You will be given a safety briefing before leaving the harbour.

The sea is a beautiful place to be, however it can quickly change, as such our office receives daily Met Office forecasts and continually monitors the weather and sea state to ensure conditions are safe for our voyages.

Sussex Voyages has a “Safety Management System” that includes procedures should the vessel be overdue. We also liaise with similar companies to ourselves to ensure we are achieving “Best Practice”

Our vessel is licensed and inspected by the Maritime Coastguard Agency, and are able to operate up to 20 miles from shore.

We carry safety equipment in excess of regulations and this includes an emergency life raft.

Sussex Voyages are members of the Professional Boatmans Association.
