Acell Foam was invented in the 1980's and
was first used in the construction of composite
duct work at Heathrow airport. The completed brief
delivered a high level of fire resistance that
would not spread flame across its’ surface,
or emit toxic fumes or dense black smoke in the
event of a fire. The first and to date only
volume production plant for the manufacture of
Mineral Filled Phenolic Foam was built in Milan
during the mid-1980's in association with BP Chemicals. BP
Chemicals returned to their core businesses in
the early 1990’s, their interest in Acell
was purchased and the current Acell Group formed.
The Acell Group has developed process technologies
that allow a wide range of materials to be
bonded to the surface of its foam to create composite
building products with exceptional performance
properties. Acell has also developed manufacturing
systems to enable high volume production of these
composite products which give specification, cost
and control advantages over traditional materials
and processes they replace.
By combining different materials
and using Acell's proprietary moulding technology
and unique manufacturing processes, it is possible
to produce high performance composite products
in a single operation, eliminating the multi-step
process usually associated with the manufacture
of composite building products. Acell’s
technology produces a composite with a unique monolithic construction that
can be specified to provide exceptional levels of thermal and sound insulation,
fire resistance and structural strength. A wide range of surface finishes
can be produced with potential uses both externally and internally. The
wide range of surface finishes that can be achieved vary
from smooth plaster, marble, wood grain, slate
or stone.
The Acell Group has a number of composite building
products which it intends to bring to market via
licensing or joint venture arrangements. Acell
will provide the enabling technology, industrialised
manufacturing systems and its’ component
foam to their licensees and partners.
Acell’s own product range of
composite doors has now established itself as the
product of choice in the UK entrance door market
with over 100,000 doors having already been installed. The
current range of entrance doors includes thermo-plastic
and thermo-set resin (GRP) faced doors. Acell firmly
believes that its thermo-set resin door range sets
the benchmark in terms of production, quality and
finish and will be the market leading door in the
UK, European and US markets within the next 5 years.
Acell is committed to enhancing its position as
a world leader in composite building materials
technology via an extensive program of research
and development and continued development of its
network of licensees and joint venture partners.
