HAZARDOUS WASTE

Giving you peace of mind.

We can dispose of any type of waste from radioactive to Acids and Alkalis.

A constant flow of legislative changes has led to more and more waste being classed as hazardous. It is important that this material is disposed of in the correct manner as failure to do so could result in environmental damage and prosecution.
The most recent legislation affecting hazardous waste disposal is the Landfill Directive. A brief overview follows:

THE LANDFILL DIRECTIVE

The Landfill Directive introduced on 16th July 2004 will have a significant impact on the removal of waste to Landfill.
There will be no co-disposal of hazardous and non hazardous waste after this date and landfill sites will only be able to accept either non hazardous waste or hazardous waste not both.
There are no hazardous landfill sites in Sussex, therefore, no hazardous waste should be placed into skips or wheelie bins which are being removed to local landfill or local transfer stations.

What is a hazardous waste:
As a guide the following should be regarded as not acceptable for general waste:

  • Oily waste in any form. Filters, spill granules, oil cans.
  • Flammable waste in any form. Paints, thinners, resins.
  • Corrosive waste in any form. Bleach, descalers, batteries.
  • Toxic material i.e. agrochemicals, lead based paints.
  • Empty containers contaminated with oils/gloss paints/thinners/toxic products.
  • Aerosols full or empty.
  • Fluorescent lamps.
  • Cathode Ray tubes – Televisions/computer screens.

Empty containers:

Empty contaminated containers can be just as hazardous as a full container, therefore empty containers of bleach or acid cleaners will need washing out prior to disposal. Once cleaned, the hazard labels should be obliterated to avoid problems with the disposal point.
Empty contaminated flammable paints and thinners containers need to be dried and vented, only when there is no liquid product and any paint has dried can the container be termed as non hazardous.
Used Oil filters and contaminated oil cans will be hazardous and should not go into a non hazardous skip.
If you have any concerns as to what waste can be placed in your skip or wheelie bin, do not put it in before consulting us and we will advise you.
We can arrange removal of Special/hazardous waste and supply waste containers for hazardous waste, if in any doubt we can arrange for our chemist to discuss any concerns regarding Special Waste, and the above issues, with you.
