Badger bait marking studies
Brooks Ecological has carried out numerous badger surveys
including very large scale bait marking exercises requiring
large teams of ecologists. In our largest survey to date,
six separate clans were identified in a seven kilometre square
site along with all associated badger setts. Bait marking
was required to assess potential impacts from development
and to apply for licenses to disturb badgers. Bait marking
uses small indigestible plastic pellets which are incorporated
in bait which consists of treacle and peanuts. Badger territorial
boundaries are then identified by searching for latrines which
contain differing coloured plastic pellets in faeces.

study, showing a territorial boundary between two clans.
Badger: artificial sett creation
The sett was constructed using 30mm land drainage pipe for
connections between dens. Dens within the sett were covered
using durable wood and a wire mesh to prevent human tampering.
The sides of the dens were left open to bare earth to allow
for natural expansion of the sett.
