Renewable energy
BE was appointed to produce an ecological impact assessment
and mitigation plan for the site of a proposed hydroelectricity
power station on the edge of the Snowdona National Park. This
has required detailed assessment of upland habitats, scarce
higher and lower plant surveys as well as an assessment of
potential impacts upon salmonid fish.

Rochdale Kingsway
BE are the Project Ecologists on this long running development,
one of the largest new build business parks in the north of
England and sited in an ecologically sensitive area. Kingsway
includes the phased construction of a distributor road network
and new off slip from the adjacent M62, plus extensive business
unit plots, SUDS drainage, and enhancements to an existing
Site of Biological Interest. During this project we have directed
extensive habitat creation, bat survey and mitigation, carried
out mud snail translocation, water vole capture, a captive
breeding programme and water vole re-introduction in nearby
vacant habitat. We have been retained through phase one and
two of this project and are completing the final phase of
water vole mitigation, and habitat monitoring over the next
two seasons.

YES South Yorkshire
Working for Tropus Project Management we produced a comprehensive
protected species survey, mitigation and enhancement package
for a proposed leisure complex on a large restored colliery
site. Central to this package was the design of a significant
new area of reed bed extending an existing location which
regularly attracts wintering bittern.

RSA Sandwell Academy
One of a number of the Department for Education school upgrades
we have been involved with, we are producing ecological baseline
assessments including phase 1 habitat survey, amphibian assessments
and bat surveys. This information is being fed into a BREEAM
ecological enhancement package to deliver biodiversity gains
and a stimulating educational environment.

Leeds Metropolitan University
Among the large number of BREEAM ecological assessments BE
has carried out is the prestigious Rose Bowl building, currently
under construction by HBG in central Leeds.

Port related facility
BE was appointed by a major UK port client to produce a wintering
bird assessment and badger territorial analysis of land adjacent
to a Special Protection Area (SPA). We also developed a water
vole mitigation strategy as part of a comprehensive EIA for
port related facilities.
