Understanding the role of the Funeral Director

Organising a funeral can be a very stressful ordeal especially when emotions are running high. If a Will has been made it should be consulted to see whether the deceased had any specific requests.

Where there is no Will, decisions will need to be made on how the service should proceed. We will help you to organise the funeral, but here are a few funeral options to consider:

Burials and Cremations

If the deceased is to be buried it is worth deciding where you would like the burial to take place. The funeral director usually makes these arrangements on your behalf.

If the deceased is to be cremated the funeral director will contact your chosen crematoria on your behalf.

Funeral Variations

Some people wish a traditional funeral, with a minimum of fuss, whilst others prefer a more elaborate funeral, whatever your requirements or budget Abbotts pride themselves on ensuring that all the arrangements are carried out with dignity and a personal touch that will make it a meaningful and individual Funeral.

Abbotts experience extends across all religious denominations and faiths through to non-religious and humanist funerals, the list is quite long but be assured most requests can be accommodated.

Traditional Funeral

The majority of people choose a religious form of a ceremony which follows their cultural traditions. The format is laid down in the service books at the crematorium or your chosen local place of worship, but can include poems and music to personalise the service.

A funeral may also be arranged in two parts: first a service at the place of worship, and then a committal at the crematorium or cemetery.

Alternative Funerals

Alternative Funerals are becoming increasingly popular, with options such as a woodland/green burial. In general when speaking about green funerals we are referring to a meadow or woodland burial. Complemented by the use of a coffin made from biodegradable materials i.e. cardboard, bamboo & willow.

The environment of green burial grounds is kept as wild and as natural as possible. Memorials and headstones are generally not permitted, but often memorial trees can be planted to mark the grave.

Civil Funerals

A Civil funeral which takes full account of the wishes, beliefs and values of the deceased and their family, not by the beliefs or ideology of the person conducting the funeral.

A Non-religious Funeral

While churchgoers and others committed to a religious faith usually wish a minister to officiate, there are a growing number of people for whom religion is unimportant, or who have made a clear decision to live their lives without it.

For them a religious funeral service may seem insincere and bring little comfort. It may not feel the right way to say farewell to someone who did not accept the religious view of life and death. We have included a link to the British Humanist Association below and we would be happy to assist you with your requests.

All religious denominations and faiths

Abbotts are extremely experienced and knowledgeable in ensuring that the funeral arrangements and services you require meet all your cultural and religious needs.
