Often seen in new office builds, it is common place
when IT Networks are in place. Using CAT 5 cabling

With the use of patch panels, something like moving
a member of staff from one end of the building to
another becomes very simple and the cabling itself

|
A
permanent telephone connection between two points
set up by a telecommunications common carrier. Typically,
leased lines are used by businesses to connect geographically
distant offices. Unlike normal dial-up connections,
a leased line is always active. The fee for the
connection is a fixed monthly rate. The primary
factors affecting the monthly fee are distance between
end points and the speed of the circuit. Because
the connection doesn't carry anybody else's communications,
the carrier can assure a given level of quality |

Patch Panel |
A
panel of network ports contained together, usually
within a telecommunications closet, that connects
incoming and outgoing lines of a LAN or other communication,
electronic or electrical system. In a LAN, the patch
panel connects the network's computers to each other
and to the outside lines that enable the LAN to
connect to the Internet or another WAN. Connections
are made with patch cords. The patch panel allows
circuits to be arranged and rearranged by plugging
and unplugging the patch cords |

PBXs |
Short
for private branch exchange, a private telephone
network used within an enterprise. Users of the
PBX share a certain number of outside lines for
making telephone calls external to the PBX. Most
medium-sized and larger companies use a PBX because
it's much less expensive than connecting an external
telephone line to every telephone in the organization.
In addition, it's easier to call someone within
a PBX because the number you need to dial is typically
just 3 or 4 digits. A new variation on the PBX theme
is the centrex, which is a PBX with all switching
occurring at a local telephone office instead of
at the company's premises. |

Generally
associated with ADSL and SDSL, Ethernet routers
are provided to allow connection from your PC or
Network to the Broadband connection. |
|
|
|
|
Short
for symmetric digital subscriber line, a technology
that allows more data to be sent over existing copper
telephone lines SDSL requires a special SDSL modem.
SDSL is called symmetric because it supports the
same data rates for upstream and downstream traffic.
A similar technology that supports different data
rates for upstream and downstream data is called
asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL). ADSL
is more popular in North America, whereas SDSL is
being developed primarily in Europe |
