Planning Solutions for Tree, Landscape and Biodiversity Issues

Introduction

PBA Consulting has long-standing expertise and experience in local authority planning matters relating to landscape, treescape and biodiversity. This includes impact assessments and other consents required to support development proposals, changes of land use or other statutory consents. Please see our Arboricultural Management page for information regarding BS5837: Trees in relation to construction.

Landscape assessment and improvements

  • Our landscape assessments include site description, analysis and evaluation.
  • Based on data gathered, we provide designs, detail mitigation measures and produce management and improvement plans.
  • We ensure new schemes satisfy Local Planning Authority requirements.
  • Our services include: landscape design, preparing planting plans, management plans and specifying works required.
  • We also instruct and supervise contractors on behalf of our clients.

Tree Preservation Orders

  • Existing trees or woodlands may be subject to Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) made by Local Planning Authorities for their protection. These orders control the felling, uprooting, topping, lopping and other willful acts of damage or destruction of trees. Trees growing in Conservation Areas have similar protection.
  • Permitted works such as pruning, removal and replanting can only take place with prior approval.
  • PBA Consulting is skilled in obtaining Local Planning Authority consent for permitted works.
  • Supervision of contractors ensures compliance with TPO legislation.

Arboricultural assessments

  • Our Arboriculturalists provide arboricultural assessments and surveys. See our advice note on BS 5837 2005: Trees in relation to construction here. These aim to satisfy local planning authority concerns and ensure a good mix of trees, shrubs and hedges with built structures.
  • We provide recommendations for developments close to retained existing trees.
  • We advise on root protection areas, tree protection zones, ground protection and the planting of new trees close to structures.
  • We can undertake all types of tree-related work - including planting, obtaining consents, instructing and supervising contractors.

Impact Assessments

  • In the UK, the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and other legislation protect many species, including bats, slow worms, badgers and newts.
  • Assessments are required as part of the planning processes.
  • PBA Consulting provides specific expertise for such assessments.
  • Impact assessments are undertaken in support of development proposals, road schemes or other changes of land use. They include scoping surveys, field studies and mitigation measures.
