What to take

My reference list of things to pack when heading off on a camping trip.

Shelter

  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Roll mat
  • And, if you have a car: inflatable mattress, waterbed, pillows, duvet, etc.

Heat and light

  • Torch
  • Nightlights
  • Candles
  • Oil burners
  • Lighters
  • Trangier or butane stove and pans
  • Disposable barbeque (keep the grill when you've finished the charcoal)
  • Spare bottle of meths/butane canisters
  • Newspaper
  • Axe

Clothes

  • Waterproofs
  • Gloves, hat, scarf
  • Dry clothes
  • Towel
  • Thermals
  • Dinner jacket
  • Something to swim in, if you need it
  • Snorkel
  • Summer clothes (it might be hot)
  • Warm clothes (it will probably be cold)
  • Something to cover up - and keep the midges out

Keeping nature at bay

  • Toothpaste/brush
  • Condoms
  • Plasters
  • Insect repellant
  • Painkillers
  • Sun cream

Food and the means to cook it

  • Metal plates, bowls, mugs
  • Champagne flutes
  • Knives, forks, spoons
  • Sharp kitchen knife
  • Penknife
  • Bottle opener/corkscrew
  • Fairy liquid
  • Scourer
  • Tin foil
  • Cool bag
  • Salt, pepper, herbs and spices
  • Garlic
  • Any food in tins (tuna, beans, frankfurters)
  • Anything you can make earlier (frozen chilli, spag bol, trifle)
  • Chocolate (plenty of)
  • Bread
  • Porridge
  • Steak
  • Bacon
