Dorgard
complies with the European Directive and UK Fire Precautions
(Workplace) Fire Safety Regulations 1997/1999.
Purpose of Fire Safety Regulations
These fire safety regulations came into being on 1 December 1997 in response
to an EU directive. The fire safety regulations are designed to provide
a minimum fire safety standard in the workplace.
This has been achieved by amending “The Management of Health
and Safety at Work fire safety regulations 1992” which required all employers
to conduct a risk assessment regarding health and safety matters.
(If you employ 5 or more people in the workplace, you must
complete a written risk assessment).
The effective legislation is The Fire
Precautions (Workplace) Fire Safety Regulations 1999.
Do
these Fire Safety Regulations apply to me? Yes, if you employ
staff. Every employer has to ensure that he/she complies with
the requirements of these fire safety regulations, relating to every
workplace that is under his/her control.
What am I
required to do? When considering fire doors carry out a
Risk Assesment of your premises. You should assess the fire
risks in the workplace ie sources of ignition, combustible
materials, and:
- Check
that a fire can be detected as quickly as possible and
people are warned eg. installation of fire alarms.
- Ensure
the fire alarm is operating correctly and forms part of a
weekly bell test.
- Ensure
that workers can get out safely; this includes protecting
corridors and stairways with self-closing fire doors.
Dorgard is a cost-effective battery operated device used
to safely retain fire doors open. When a fire alarm sounds,
Dorgard allows the fire doors to swing shut
automatically.
- Provide
fire fighting equipment such as fire extinguishers.
- Ensure
that workers know what to do in the event of a fire –
identify escape routes which need to be signposted and well
lit.
- Maintain and test your fire safety equipment
regularly.
Dorgard complies with the relevant fire safety regulations because
it can keep fire doors open in busy areas; it simply listens
for the sound of the fire alarm. When the alarm sounds, the
rubber stopper keeping the door open retracts, allowing the
fire door to swing closed.
The installed
cost for Dorgard is typically less than a quarter of the price
of an alternative electro-magnetic device.
