Thread Veins

Thread veins are very small veins that are most commonly visible on the face, legs, nose, chest and arms. In some people they expand and show through the skin, giving a red or purplish appearance.

Thread veins, also known as telangiectasia or broken capillaries, are formed by the dilation of a small group of blood vessels located close to the surface of the skin. They look like red or purple 'sunbursts', branched or web patterns, and can cause a dull ache after prolonged standing.

What causes Thread veins?

Thread veins can be caused by too much exposure to the sun over the years.

They may also be inherited. Thread veins can sometimes be a sign of rosacea, a skin condition, or can result from overuse of steroid creams.

Thread veins are more obvious after mid-life, when the skin becomes thinner and loses some of its collagen.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are the smaller superficial purple or red veins which stretch like a web under the skin.

Spider veins can appear anywhere on the body but more commonly on the legs, face, chest or even abdomen. They can cover either a very small or very large area of skin.

Spider veins usually occur in association with larger dilated blood vessels (often blue / green in colour) called "reticular veins".

This problem affects people of all age groups, skin types and lifestyles. it is estimated that over 60% of the adult population suffer from varicose and/or spider veins.

What causes Spider Veins?

No one knows the exact cause of spider veins, but there are several factors that cause a person to be more likely to develop them.

Heredity, or being born with weak vein valves, is the greatest factor. Hormones also play a role. The hormonal changes that occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, as well as taking estrogens, progesterone, and birth control pills can cause a woman to develop varicose veins or spider veins.

During pregnancy, besides the increases in hormone levels, there also is a great increase in the volume of blood in the body that can cause veins to enlarge.

Other factors that weaken vein valves and that may cause varicose or spider veins include ageing, obesity, leg injury, and prolonged standing, such as for long hours on the job.

Spider veins on the cheeks or nose of a fair-skinned person may occur from sun exposure.

How do you treat Thread and Spider Veins?

We treat Thread Veins and Spider Veins with Vasculight.

What is Vasculight?

VascuLight advanced technology approved by the United States Food and Drug Agency (FDA) in 1998 after long and exhaustive clinical tests, is a non-invasive breakthrough treatment which offers a comprehensive solution for the treatment of unwanted veins.

Importantly, VascuLight will treat most blood vessels, which up to now have been difficult and very painful to treat.

The treatment

Until now treating veins was a lengthy and painful process using needles during surgery. The VascuLight system is designed to treat unsightly veins simply, safely and using a non-invasive process without disruption to normal activities. Any post-treatment redness normally fades within a few hours.

Treatment is performed using a intense pulsed light technology or laser, and often a combination of both technology are used. The light is absorbed into the haemoglobin in the blood producing heat energy which effectively destroys the vein.

Veins usually require a series of treatments over a period of time. Even smaller vessels require time to resolve successfully.

No stripping or injections are used.

How many treatments do I need?

A treatment plan is developed and the optimum combination of intense pulsed light and laser will be decided.

The duration and number of treatments varies, depending on the area to be covered and type of lesions requiring treatment.

Normally a course of 3 to 5 treatments are required, at approximately one month intervals.

Is Vasculight painful?

The Vasculight treatment is less painful, quicker and generally more successful than conventional methods.

Patients have described the sensation as "warm and prickly" or "like the snap of a rubber band".

What results can I expect?

IPL Treatments using Photorejuvenation are recognised for a very high measure of patient satisfaction.

Patients can see dramatic results within a very short time.

How much does it cost?

Veins treatments start from £200. However, the exact price we quote is completely individual and depends on many factors and can only be properly determined by our fully qualified Doctor or Nurse who will assess your condition and guide you to the most suitable treatment options.

What the patients say

Joyce Wallworth
This letter is to express how pleased I'm with the treatment I've had done on my legs to remove the broken veins, which have caused me problems for the past few years. I would not wear shorts or skirts. or even go swimming, but now that is all in the past.
This summer it will be different thanks to the Vasculight treatment. I can recommend it to anyone with problems with veins.

Jane Fisher
'I had spider veins at the bottom and the top of one leg. They had bothered me for years but I didn't know there was anything I could do about them. I thought I just had to live with them. 'I had been in contact with the Private Clinic and they told me about this new treatment, so I thought I would give it a go. There is not even any need for anaesthetic. I've had only one lot of treatment so far, but the results are amazing.
