Mayor of Hove

Dignitaries have been adding their eco hopes to a environmental wish trees at all three Tates of Sussex garden centres.

Hove's MP was joined by Brighton and Hove's mayor and local councillors at Mayberry Garden centre, in Portslade, to make their green wishes public and fix them on a specially installed wooden 'tree', It is one of a network as part of a national campaign to raise awareness of environmental issues organised by manufacturers.

With his wish, Mike Weatherley revealed that he is one of only a few Conservatives who is anti-nuclear, wishing that 'there is no need for nuclear power'. The mayor called for 'less pollution and cleaner air' in her wish.

Jonathan Tate, managing director of Tates of Sussex Garden Centres which runs the Old Shoreham Road site, said he was delighted by the response to the tree. "It is wonderful that so many people care about the planet and the environment we live in."

At Paradise Park, in Newhaven, MP Norman Baker devoted his wish to a subject close to his ministerial portfolio, calling on airlines to take responsibility for the pollution they generate. He wished for 'an international agreement to ensure that aviation pays its environmental price."

And, at South Downs Nurseries, local MP and policing minister Nick Herbert popped in to kick-start the wishing tree scheme and show his support for environmental issues.
