Some form of Disaster Recovery is essential for organisations.

  • What happens if your Server is Stolen or is subject to a major failure?
  • What happens If your offices are affected by Terrorism, Fire, Flood or Act of God?
  • What is the impact of not having your Fileserver, Email and data available?

In order to minimise the disruption that may be caused you will need a Disaster Recovery Plan in place. The basic Plan that most companies use is to backup data on to tape and to store the tape off-site.

If you ever need to restore your data from the last available tape you could be without a Fileserver and Data for at least 3 working days. This is an estimate based upon the assumption that the backup Tape supplied works and that there is a replacement Fileserver available.

Our proposal is that you have a replacement Server stored off-site which is regularly tested with your backup tapes. In the event of a need we can restore your latest available backup tape to the Server and Install this unit on-site within 7 working hours. All that is then required will be to connect the workstations and printers to the new Server.

  • An effective disaster recovery plan should incorporate a combination of both procedural and Physical solutions.
  • After a plan has been designed and implemented, it MUST be tested.
  • Has data been preserved successfully?
  • Are the critical systems and data appropriately protected?
  • Can the system/data be recovered cleanly and quickly?
  • Does the plan take into account legal issues concerning data protection?
  • How fast can the data be retrieved?

Computer systems are critical to the operation of any organisation. What would be the impact if you were unable to Invoice, meet order deadlines, receive Emails, produce month end reports or pay salaries.

  • It is estimated that 1 out of 500 data centers will have a severe disaster each year. (McGladrey and Pullen)
  • 43 percent of companies experiencing disasters never re-open, and 29 percent close within two years. (McGladrey and Pullen)

Having an easily recoverable backup copy of your data is a fundamental disaster recovery plan.

Can you afford to allow your Company to take the Risk any longer?

There are issues with Disaster Recovery that need to be mentioned at the outset, and they are as follows:

Data can only be recovered from the last available backup tape and it is your Company’s responsibility to instigate a correct backup procedure which should include the off-site storage of tapes. Tapes stored at BVR Site could be up to 5 days old.

The amount of time taken to restore a Server to full functionality will vary, dependant upon the amount of data to be restored and the speed of the Tape Drive.

The connection of Workstations and Printing will be subject to Product availability.

Internet Connectivity is outside the scope of this disaster recovery solution

These issues aside, at its worst, the BVR Disaster Recovery Solution is likely to provide a faster and better service than the current method of recovering your Data, which will require the purchase and installation of a New Server prior to the restoration of the data. We estimate that we can restore your data from tape in approximately 7 working hours, thereafter we will bring the Emergency Server on-site and configure to your Network.

How long can your business systems be off-line without the BVR Disaster Recovery Option?

With your current procedure of taking a daily tape backup we estimate that we would need the following time frame:

  • An Engineer would attend on-site within 2-4 hours of Server Failure (Next day for Compaq Engineer) to ascertain and diagnose problem.
  • If the Server is completely un-repairable a further 8 hours will be required to purchase and supply alternative Server.
  • We would require a further 8 hours to configure the Server and Install the Network Software.
  • The recovery of your data and reconfiguration to your Network will take another 8 working hours.
  • Total Minimum estimate to install and configure a new working server 3 days from Call out.

Once a plan has been designed BVR will document the procedures and Implement them

  • Verify by testing it on a monthly basis
  • Revise plan as environment changes and then re-test
  • Not rely on any specific people for plan execution
