Yes, it’s over 35 years that Greg has been selling carpets and flooring in Portslade. Back in 1977 Greg started his career in Boundary Road working for the family business A & S Carpets. Within two years Greg was shaving and learning his craft.

Those were the days, Greg remembers selling shag pile carpets to Peter Ward who was Brighton’s hottest striker, Squeeze were top of the charts, and Greg was in love with Debra Harry (of Blondie fame).

By 1980 Greg and his family had built up a thriving business running three stores in Portslade, Burgess Hill and Eastbourne. Sadly, the family lost their dad that year and it was left to the brothers to carry on.

The Stone carpets firm was born, and with a lot of hard work, great fitters loyal, staff and most importantly loyal customers the business flourished.

We felt so grown up at the time said Greg, although my big brother was 27 and I was 19. 1985 saw the company move to larger premises in Victoria Road Portslade. They took over the warehouse premises from tower carpets. The plan was to show hundreds of room size remnants under one roof, a proven winner even today.

1987 saw the great storm, the warehouse lost its complete rear wall. Talk about a smash and grab sale, Greg and the boys were selling remnants covered in rubble a few bargains were had. Some of our best customers brought in soup and food as we camped under the stars, we had no other security.

By 1999 Greg was solely running the Victoria Road business as Greg Stone Carpets, until the site was redeveloped in 2004.

A move to a new development on Portslade seafront and a name change from Carpets to Flooring reflected the trend towards a vast diversity of flooring choices. Today we sell Laminates, Vinyl and Cushion flooring. Our very popular Karndean Floors are sold at Internet prices. However, carpets are very much still in vogue. So the tried and tested approach of lots of top quality roll ends and an endless choice of colours and textures seems to be the right mix. Our customer base has grown but the same loyal customers have remained. We now are dealing with two or three generations of the same families. With the loyal support of his and the foster family, Greg has managed to retain the business having been through Leukaemia and other health problems. No Sympathy please, he is OK now!

The guys in store today have been in the business for many years, and provide a service second to none. Greg Stone the leading and largest independent in the area, often imitated never bettered.
