R22 is one of the most commonly used refrigerants in the UK. Gasses such as R22 gasses have deemed as to harmful to the atmosphere. With targets to reduce carbon emissions and improve climate change the government decided to ban the production of this harmful gas.
In Jan 2009 they stopped the production of the gas, and it is illegal to stock pile the gas. From 1st December 2014 it will be illegal to have a functioning R22 unit.
According to the DEFRA’s phase out strategy, it will remain legal to continue using RAC equipment containing HCFC beyond the phase out dates proving they do not require maintenance that involves putting any HCFC’s back into a system.
There are limited options available, as they are trying to phase out this system all together. However there are more efficient units on the market so you would save money on the cost of replacement through the cheaper running costs, longer term.
